ScriptWorks, a PCAB-accredited compounding pharmacy serving California statewide, specializes in pain management compounding for patients with different types of pain.

In each clinical decision, practitioners must consider several factors to decide what may work best for their patients. Oftentimes, patients may not achieve optimal results with mass-produced, commercially available medications. Prescribers often reach out to the clinical pharmacists at ScriptWorks to develop compounded medication for providing patients more customized/targeted approaches as well as alternatives to addictive opioid-based pain medications

Topical Pain Medication

One therapy option might be topical pain medication that involves multiple drugs that may be used for acute musculoskeletal pain (strains and sprains) or chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Topical pain medications are applied externally and are absorbed through the skin.

They potentially exert their effects close to the sight of application and there should be little systemic uptake or distribution. Topical applications potentially limit systemic adverse side effects by minimizing systemic concentrations of the drug and avoiding the stomach and first pass metabolism in the liver.

One of the keys to topical or transdermal compounding is to use a base that shows good skin penetration and can deliver the active ingredients to the target site. This typically involves a base with appropriate properties, such as optimal viscosity, compatibility with the active ingredient, and skin compatibility.
