Everyone knows summer is the perfect time for outdoor fun, from soaking up the sun to chilling around the campfire. But with these activities comes the risk of burns, ranging from mild sunburns to more severe campfire injuries. Knowing how to avoid and care for these burns significantly helps us stay safe and enjoy the season.

Understanding Sunburns: Causes and Prevention

Sunburns happen when your skin gets too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Certain medications may increase your chances of getting sunburned, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), thiazide diuretics, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, retinoids, tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline, and St. John’s wort.

The effects of sunburn can vary from mild redness to painful blisters and peeling skin.

Tips on Preventing Sunburn

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Be sure to check the expiration date on your sunscreen.
  • Avoid the sun during peak hours, typically from 10 AM to 4 PM.
  • Wear protective clothing like long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.
  • Clothing with SPF ratings offers extra protection.
  • Stay well-hydrated with water and electrolytes to help keep your skin healthy.

Caring for Sunburns

If you do get sunburned, it’s important to act quickly. Start with a cool bath or shower to soothe your skin, but skip the soap for a few days to avoid drying it out. Afterward, apply aloe vera or a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Silicon-based gels like ScriptWorks’ Over-The-Counter Scar Moisturizing Gel may also help. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen may ease pain and swelling. Drink plenty of water with electrolytes to help your body recover, and stay out of the sun until your skin has healed.

Staying Safe Around Campfires

Campfires are a summer favorite, but they can also be a hazard, especially for children. To minimize risks, always keep a safe distance from the fire, and ensure children and pets do the same. Using a designated fire ring or pit helps contain the fire.

Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it’s fully extinguished before you leave. It’s also smart to have water or a hose nearby just in case. Wear snug clothing to prevent it from catching fire.

Addressing Campfire Burns

If you or someone else gets burned, act quickly. Run cool water over the burn for 10–20 minutes to help with pain and swelling. Cover the burn with a clean, nonstick bandage or cloth, and avoid applying ice directly to the area.

Products like ScriptWorks’ Over-The-Counter Scar Moisturizing Gel or sheets help keep the burn moist and help reduce scarring. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help with discomfort, but if the burn is severe or larger than the palm of the hand, seek medical help immediately.
