What are compounded medications?
Compounded medications are prepared by specially trained pharmacists for individual patients according to physician prescriptions. They are not commercially available; rather, they are prescribed by a legally authorized prescriber and prepared by a pharmacist to meet an individual’s unique needs.
Why is PCAB® accreditation important?
The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB®), an independent accrediting board, provides patients and prescribers a way to select compounding pharmacies that meet high quality standards. With an estimated 30 to 40 million prescriptions compounded each year, there is a need for a system of standards by which compounding pharmacies can certify quality processes. While state boards of pharmacy regulate compounding, the PCAB provides a comprehensive, ongoing way to ensure that compounding pharmacies have undergone rigorous quality assessments.
The PCAB assesses pharmacies that voluntarily apply to determine if they maintain principles, policies, and standards for the proper compounding of medications. Pharmacies passing the inspection receive the PCAB Seal of Accreditation. PCAB requires that accredited pharmacies continually follow the PCAB standards to maintain accreditation and recertifies its members every three years with onsite inspections. PCAB accreditation assures that patients receive high-quality medications that meet regulatory requirements.
